Let’s start with hospitals. As you all know, hospital staff in general could care less if you have complaints. They are busy, they are overstaffed, they are underpaid and just trying to do what they were supposedly trained for. They could care less if you have a lawyer because they know that is an empty threat. However there are three words that will get you an instant discharge and a whole lot of respect. That is ” the Joint Commission”. Let me explain. The joint commission or Commission as it is now referred to, is an independent non profit agency that sets the bar for excellence in patient care and safety by conducting on site surveys and evaluations. They help identify areas that need improvement. Now here is the important part. They are the one who give hospitals accreditation. Which without they lose the ability of accessing Medicare and Medicaide payments, they lose the ability to access one of the largest pools of funding. How do you complain? Easy. Go to Jointcommission.com at the top of the page click on ” contact us” it will bring up another page at the top is an option to file a patient safety complaint” click on that,it will bring up another page with a blue box that says submit a complaint it will the take you to two more pages and that is where the complaint form is. Fill it out and submit, it is the fastest way to get results, You will trigger a surprise inspection that can end with their accreditation being pulled if there are enough violations. Believe me hospitals are terrified of a patient making a complaint to the Commission. Why, because the Commission takes patient complaints very, very seriously and will show up unannounced and ready to condemn anything and all things they find. I have seen hospitals who lost accreditation struggle and I mean struggle to get it back. While on the site explore and read you will find you have many rights and how to express concerns before they escalate. I found these actions very beneficial to my problems with a hospital.
